Before starting her blog, she was a clinical associate professor at Fordham University’s Graduate school of social services. Her Instagram has over 250,000 followers, most of whom are young. Lyn’s rejection of age as a variable to be considered in how one dresses has resonated and her blog has fans from around the world. In my old blog and in my book, I talk about interruptions the ones that come from outside of us and those that come from within. And for the Fordham University professor-turned-blogger and Instagram star, it never will be. At the age when many people retire, Lyn Slater has reinvented herself as an influencer of popular culture, fashion model, and global icon. This includes having a haircut with my Japanese hair stylist Jun. ![]() While I love my new home on the Hudson, there are just some experiences of my former life that are irreplaceable. People (like Lyn) who are not famous or celebrities but are smart, creative, thoughtful, engaged, socially responsible and most importantly clear and comfortable with who they are and reflect this in how they dress are who this talk is about. I discover there are certain things I can only find there. She started her blog, Accidental Icon, in September 2014 because she could not find a fashion blog or magazine that offered an urban, modern, intellectual aesthetic and also spoke to people who live “interesting but ordinary lives” in cities. Lyn Slater is a professor of social work, a cultural influencer, a model, a writer, partner, mother and grandmother. After she started a blog and an Instagram account, things snowballed. I enter my new/old kitchen with its cheery buttercup yellow cupboards. Professor Lyn Slater never planned to be a fashion icon. Calvin is already up and I can smell the freshly ground coffee. Sleeping in for me is now 7:30 AM since during the week I am up at 5. Women Who Inspire: Lyn Slater, Accidental Icon. Lyn Slater is cultural influencer, writer, and founder of Accidental Icon, a fashion blog that has captivated nearly a million dedicated followers since its launch in 2014. But that's exactly what Lyn Slater did, because she was, "having trouble finding a fashion blog or magazine that offered an urban, modern, intellectual aesthetic but also spoke to women who live what I call 'interesting but ordinary lives' in cities." And Lyn has a message to everyone who thinks they want fame and to be special: the real secret is to just be okay being you. Different time, Different Place, Familiar Conversations. Each outfit we choose to wear tells a story of who we are, were, and can be. One day when this pandemic is over, I look forward to meeting her in person, until then I will swoon over her across the globe.It's not often a grandmother and university professor becomes an icon of style with a growing online Instagram and blog following of all ages. Lyn is one of my all time favourite women in fashion that I have admired from afar, I have said to my friend before that ‘I want to be like Lyn when I grow up’, but the truth is I want to be like Lyn now. I was due to meet Lyn in New York last year, but in my third trimester was delayed waddling around the city, so this conversation is the next best thing.
